One of the biggest surprises I had this year happened last August 11, 2012. It has been a month since I celebrated my 18th birthday so honestly, I wasn't really expecting to receive any gift but then that day happened.
It was the day for the Graphika Manila. Though I told my friends I really want to go, I myself believed that i wouldn't be able to as I had no money to buy a ticket. Imagine, how can I, a person who only has P100/day as "baon", produce P1750 in a month? (it could be possible though if I were not to eat and were to walk to and from Mapua to our House XD). Seriously, I thought "maybe next year..."
BUT THEN, while me and Nathalie were spending our long break at SM Manila window shopping, Nathalie received a message from our friend saying that Kuya Johnny was asking if I was with her. I checked my phone to find messages from kuya asking me where I was. I texted him through Nath's phone (I really don't load much) that i am indeed with her and we were at SM. Me and Nath then continued our window shopping.
That time, I started thinking why he was looking for me. I then remember, reading his dm from twitter earlier that day telling me we should go to Graphika Manila. I answered I can't because I can't afford the ticket. I told this to Nath who began thinking "Hey, Maybe he will take you to Graphika.." We both laughed at the thought, after all graphika Manila was too expensive and having Kuya treat me to it would be wishful thinking.. or so I thought.
Kuya then called. We were at Payless then trying out shoes. On the phone he kept on persuading me to go with him, he even told me that he'll let me borrow money. Of course, I declined, it's unthinkable to borrow P1750 from a friend. I don't really have the heart nor guts to do that XD Still, he kept on persuading me. I remember him "threatening" "Sige ka, pag di ka pumunta, di rin ako pupunta.. Please Dindin, Please...??" hahahahha... Though I am flattered with the thought that he would like me to come along, I really can't bear borrowing such a big amount of money so I replied with "Kuya next year na lang, saka may quiz kami sa EMG maya...". Still he kept on persuading me. I was really thinking then na "Minsan lang to.. sayang naman, siya na nga nag-offer eh.. babayaran ko naman...pero pano ung quiz sa emg?" So Nath and I decided to go check the EMG faculty for any sign of our professor. When we arrived at the faculty we were told she hasn't been seen around so Nath and I decided to study in the library instead just in case. While giving our bags to the "luggage counter" Kuya called again. I couldn't hear him clearly so I had to step out, he then told me about his REAL PLAN...
The truth was, he was REALLY gonna treat me to the Graphika Manila. He was planning to tell me in the place of the event itself that the ticket is his gift to me and I don't need to pay him. Of course hearing this I told him I take back what I said and since it would be for free I would go with him. I was really really really really really HAPPY. I really didn't expect for it to happen. after all it was his birthday the day before and I wasn't even able to give him any gift and here he is giving me a gift. Mixed emotions of happiness, shock and embarassment came upon me. So when Kuya told me he would pick me up at SM, I came running XD haha (SERIOUSLY I WAS RUNNING ALL THE WAY TO SM) hahahhahah...
After around 20 mins he arrived, and we went to the event. i really learned alot plus there were so many freebies so it was real fun. In addition, my prof was absent that day so I really had nothing to worry about. :)
It was the first time I received such an expensive and thoughtful gift from a friend that's why i treasure my first graphika Manila experience. Hopefully by next year I would be able to return the favor to Kuya and make him real happy too on his birthday. :)
